What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition in which the weblike band of tissue on the bottom of your foot gets highly inflamed. Because the plantar fascia ligament acts as a shock absorber, it’s common for it to grow inflamed with repetitive stress like distance running or dancing.

Other factors, such as obesity, extended time on your feet, and poor foot mechanics, can contribute to plantar fasciitis as well. If you don’t treat plantar fasciitis effectively, it’s likely to become chronic and cause intense pain long term.

The main sign of plantar fasciitis is usually serious heel pain. In most cases, the pain begins when you wake up and step out of bed. Although the pain usually lessens through the rest of the day as your plantar fascia stretches, you’ll likely have the same pain in the morning.

Sometimes you may feel plantar fasciitis pain in your foot arch area, too. Some plantar fasciitis sufferers also have burning or tingling pain.

What is the best treatment for plantar fasciitis?

Deo starts with in-house diagnostic testing to verify your diagnosis and determine the underlying cause. Then, she tailors a multidisciplinary treatment plan for your plantar fasciitis.

Dr. Deo is an expert in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, in which she uses light pressure, stretching exercises, and other targeted hands-on treatments to adjust malpositioned bones and elongate the tissues in your foot. This encourages optimal pain relief and rapid healing, particularly when combined with other types of care, including:

  • Cortisone injections to reduce plantar fascia inflammation and pain
  • Physical therapy for strengthening, plantar fascia lengthening, and pain relief
  • Chiropractic care for improved spinal, pelvic, and foot alignment and pain relief
  • Acupuncture for pain relief
  • Massage therapy for pain relief
  • Corrective exercise to resolve improper form
  • Running therapy to improve technique

In many cases, you may need to make some adjustments, like replacing your footwear, using orthotics, losing excess weight and undergoing plantar fascia stretching exercises, to heal fully and reduce the chance of recurrence.
