What is sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when your body’s sciatic nerve behaves in an abnormal fashion and causes low back pain that radiates down one of your legs. Your sciatic nerve is a long nerve — it starts in your lower back and then splits to go through your hip and then it travels all the way down your leg.

Sciatica can be highly painful, making it difficult to walk, stand upright, or even relax in a comfortable position. Some sufferers describe numbness, burning, tingling, or electric shock-like sensations with their sciatica pain. Coughing, sneezing, or other sudden involuntary movements can worsen your symptoms.

The main cause of sciatica is nerve compression or pinching. There are several reasons that your sciatic nerve might grow pinched or compressed, including herniated disc, bone spurs, and spinal tumors. Any changes in the natural balance of your spine could potentially lead to sciatica.

Certain factors can increase your risk for sciatica, including:

  • Aging, which can lead to spinal degeneration
  • Obesity, which stresses your spine
  • Jobs that stress your spine
  • Systemic disease like diabetes, which causes nerve damage

Other sources of lower back pain have overlapping symptoms to Sciatica. Dr. Deo will utilize your physical exam and diagnostic tools such as Nerve Conduction Studies and Diagnostic Ultrasound to tease out your unique diagnosis. This process is imperative as the treatment regimens can vary greatly between the different sources of lower back pain.
