What are trigger points?

Trigger points are small painful areas within the fascia of your muscles. They’re sometimes called muscle knots, but trigger points are much more than just a bump in your muscle tissue. A trigger point may cause chronic soreness, and often causes intense pain when you press on the muscle. Sometimes, trigger points can also cause referred pain that occurs in other unconnected areas.

Dr. Deo performs a gentle physical exam, palpating the areas where you feel pain to check for muscle twitches, referred pain, and other trigger point problems.

You may also need specialized testing, such as Ultrasound, which Dr. Deo can perform on-site to verify your trigger points and their causes.

What is the best treatment for trigger point pain?

  • Osteopathic manipulative medicine

Dr. Deo is an experienced Osteopathic Manipulative Physician with many years of training in specialized manual trigger point relief techniques. She uses hands-on methods to relax the tight knots of muscle and relieve your pain.

  • Trigger point injections

Often, trigger point injections with local anesthetics or corticosteroids are an excellent solution for trigger point pain relief. Injections can work in two ways: the medication relieves your inflammation and pain, but the needle itself helps break up the muscle knot.

  • Dry needling

Dry needling involves inserting very fine needles into your trigger points. With dry needling, the focus is on breaking up the muscle tension.

Dr. Deo also works with several on-site experts to offer multidisciplinary care, such as Physical Therapy, Massage, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, and more. With Dr. Sheetal Deo, all the trigger point care you need is in one central location.
